I got a tube full of these HP HPDL-1414 displays from eBay, and this is the little test setup I built to try one out. The green part is the Atmel ATmega8 microcontroller module, and the blue part is the solderless breadboard. The LED display is interfaced by a parallel bus to the ports on the microcontroller (the green wires at the very top of the photo). A simple assembler program on the chip sets up the ports and writes four bytes of ASCII to the display.
