Hardware add-ons

I soon began hacking on the hardware of the machine. My first change was to increase the 6502 clock to 2MHz, doubling the machine's speed — a very early example of overclocking. Perhaps I should have fitted a “turbo switch” so that I could run games at normal speed!

In all, I added these extra bells and whistles to my UK101:

  • Numeric keypad
  • AY-3-8910 sound generator
  • Colour video board
  • Rewritten monitor ROM
  • 6522 parallel printer port
  • SP0256 allophone speech chip
  • Two 7-segment LED displays
  • Analog I/O board
  • RAM expansion to 32k bytes
  • 9600 baud digital cassette
  • 300 baud modem
  • Software-selectable baud rate generator
  • EPROM programmer
  • Joystick port
And, of course, my father made a very fine wooden case for it! No Compukit is complete without one...
